I've been very interested in this thread, as it makes me feel as though I'm
not going nuts myself. I've been using Opera reeds for the past several
years, very happily. Of each box of 6, I can generally use 5-6 without
doing any work on them, and they play really well for klezmer. However, a
couple of months ago, as I was getting ready to start a recording project,
I all of a sudden couldn't find a reed to play that didn't feel like a
popsicle stick. I went through a dozen boxes, at least, with no luck. I
finally ended up having to do some major shaving to get anything playable.

I wonder whether there was some world-wide cane blight or something that
would affect reed production in this way. It certainly is puzzling and
annoying.
