According to Augustin Duquès (1899-1972) who was Principal Clarinet under
Arturo Toscanini from 1937 to 1949, when Gino Cioffi came to the United
States (in the 1930s?) he played with the reed on top. Duquès told him that
he wouln't get any work in this country unless he played with the reed on
the bottom so he switched, continued to play double-lip and went on to be
Principal Clarinet of the Metropolitan Opera, the Cleveland Orchestra and
the Boston Symphony.
