Subj: [kl] Information on Henri Bok?
Date: Thu, 14 Dec 2000 19:05:22 -0500

Until last night, Henri Bok was a name I associated with the bass clarinet,
but I'd been unable to find any recordings, his bass clarinet method book,
or anything connected with him. Then last night in Tower Records on
Broadway and 66th Street I found what I gather is a relatively new CD,
_Worlds of Bass Clarinet_, on the Globe label. All the material is for solo
bass clarinet; much of it appears to have been written for Bok; and one
piece--the last--he wrote himself.

There was only one copy of the CD in the store. I grabbed it. Yes, I paid
for it on the way out:-).

He seems to be an absolutely staggering technician and musician. He upper
register sings like a flute...the lower?--well, it's a bass clarinet, after
all.

An ordinary set-up, interesting only because of the bell. According the
notes, he plays a Selmer 25/II bass, fitted with a Pomarico crystal mp, a BG
Tradition ligature, and uses Marca reeds. The oddity is the Rossi wooden
bell. I presume this is a custom job, and not part of Luis Rossi's line of
standard equipment?

In any case...IS the method book readily available? At one point it was out
of print and coming back into circulation, but I've heard nothing more. It
appears Bok has made the rounds of various ClarinetFests. Has anyone met,
heard, or even played with him?

"...perhaps we really complete those we love, fulfill their finally
unchanging essence, when they're gone from us, when we take into ourselves
their portions of them still available to us, to acknowledge them more
perfectly, more purely, and do homage to the fugitive, protean forms of love
of, and love from."--C.K. Williams, "Misgivings"
