You`re quite right Bob, British bands still use "silver" instruments. But
whereas years ago the bands used to call themselves "silver bands", that
term has become redundant: so they have become "brass bands". The term
"brass" speaks for itself I think, similar to woodwind, even tho` the flute
/picc are "silver".

The British Brass Bands are, in my opinion, the best in the world. No, the
United States has no such movement - although there are pockets where you
can find some reasonable groups.....although nothing like you have
there. The recordings I have heard from England are beyond description
except for me to say that I wish I could play in one!

I used to dislike the sound of a brass band Roger. It wasn`t "orchestral"
enough. I can appreciate their dedication to amateur music, and to the sound
of the lyrically played cornet solo. I can`t take to their music, - it is
"brass band music" and not "music" music. It`s not even "brass music" in
it`s academic sense. I tried to get as near as I could to a real "brass"
style of writing, - "orchestral" (wrong word) if you like. I like to think
that I succeeded, as other music on the C.D. is very obviously "brass
bandish". I have also been "type cast" by a producer who, because I
understood wind bands, thought that both types were as near as damn it, the
"same thing"!! He is now an independent record company (of his own making),
after starting out as a guitarist/songwriter, then moving on to become a
producer for EMI. Whilst at EMI he tells of his "hard luck" tale. He was
there at the time the Beatles were signed. Another producer was placed with
the Beatles,- and he was placed with recording the Marines Forces Military
Bands. The "other" producer went on to become Sir George Martin. My producer
still records the Marines from time to time - and me.
Best,
Tony W.
