Ian, I agree that Vandoren reeds have been going downhill lately. For
years, I had used RICO # 5, and they seemed to work just fine. I went
back to Vandoren 3 1/2 about 3 years ago, after developing a friendship
with Jon Manasse. For months, maybe years, I couldn't seem to find a
reed, and I thought that perhaps I had the onset of emphasyma. I lost my
endurance for a while and my embochure seemed to turn to rubber. I even
thought that I may have had a stroke in my sleep.
When I went to Norman last year, I tried a new RICO, Grand Select
"Evolution" #3, recommended to me by John Cipolla, a wonderful NYC
clarinetist who also doubles on everything including saxophone, piccolo
and bass clarinet at Radio City Music Hall. Since then my preoccupation
with imaginary illnesses has disappeared and my beautiful tone has
returned. I wish that Vandorens would work for me. I have written
several emails to Vandoren.com complaining about their inconsistency as
well as the fact that I can't afford to buy 10 boxes at a time like some
people.
I once asked my teacher, David Weber, a Vandoren spokesperson, if he
believed in God. He told me that he was a confirmed atheist, that he
didn't believe in God, but that he believed in the Vandoren company.
When I wrote to Vandoren, I told them that David Weber believed in the
Vandoren company, and that was easy for him to say since he had an
unlimited supply of reeds, but that for many of us, we couldn't afford
to buy enough boxes to find a good reed. I just went through a box of 3
1/2 strengh Vandorens, and they all seemed like boards. I tried the
first RICO out of the box of "evolutions" and I have been happy all
week. I apologize if this letter is too long. ANNIE
