I don't think this is surprising. Jazz musicians usually have an
appreciation, if not an great knowledge, of classical music. Also, jazz
musicians in many cases have been the beneficiaries of centuries of
'classical' instrumental pedagogy, and while jazz education may be in its
early stages, comparatively, its instrumental basis is substantially the same
as 'classical'.
