Jennifer,
People resort to calling each other names when they have no other means by
which to communicate. For some, it is out of frustration. For others, it
is because it is the only way they have communicated their entire lives -
when they don't get what they want.
You can change this kind of behavior in a child. It is much, much more
difficult to motivate change in an
adult. Immature? Yes. Fixable? Yes. But the person has to recognize
that they are being immature and petty and understand why. If they don't
and they don't, change won't (can't) happen.
