However, working hard to pack in the last possible puff of air could also
lead to tension throughout the chest and abdomen.

IMHO, this is where good breathing exercises become most useful, especially
those that use timed and rhythmical air intake and release. (Such as 4
beats intake, hold for 4, release in 4 slow puffs)
