If you want to know what it's like running out of air, play flute for
awhile! (I had to pass juries on all woodwinds while at U. of Mich.)
Clarinet is a breeze after that!

I second this one. Flute really takes it out of you. The resistance is
much different. It took years after I had become fairly accomplished on the
clarinet before i cold manage a decent sound on a flute. I still find that
playing a certain amount of flute, as well as being a fun musical hobby,
really adds to my clarinet playing.
