Oh dear did I make a poor choice of words. The "calling names" part referred
to the email exchanges and though I did use "exchanging vitriolic notes" to
refer to your situation, I chose that word because it was what popped into my
head at the time and a better alternative hadn't occurred to me. I think you
chose to send your note to the band director because it seemed to be the best
thing to do at the time, and since I don't know the situation I really can't
and won't judge as my below comment may have implied I had.

P.S. I'm glad you brought up the subject. It helped me organize some of my
thoughts on this matter.
