STand, sit, slouch, whatever.......

I simply do not understand the purpose of this discussion.

Tone production is NOT about how much air one can pack into their lungs.

It is about supporting the tone with the appropriate amount of airstream with the amount of force one wants to get the tonal quality desired. That can be just a whisper......

Now, I'm a pretty big guy (6', 195 lbs) and I play the bass regularly. I have a LOT of lung capacity. If I filled my lungs totally every time I took a breath while playing, I would have air left over at the end of most phrases, and would have to exhale before inhaling, like an oboe player.

It doesn't seem to matter if I'm standing, sitting erect, slouching, etc. Now, I have been playing wind instruments for 39 years, so it could just be second nature......

If you want to know what it's like running out of air, play flute for awhile! (I had to pass juries on all woodwinds while at U. of Mich.) Clarinet is a breeze after that!

Regards
Walter
