Subj: [kl] AOL 6.0 bad for e-lists [off-topic]
Date: Tue, 12 Dec 2000 19:32:41 -0500

AOhelL users on klarinet, alert -- switching to the new AOL 6.0 is a bad idea
for people who subscribe to e-lists. Astonishingly enough, there is no way
to turn of HTML on AOL 6.0! I didn't believe that story the first few times
I heard about it, but according to an AOL beta-tester's message to Piporg-L
this week, it's no rumor. Needless to say, I will not be "upgrading" to AOL
6.0 unless and until they fix this major problem (and a few others). I also
read a negative review of AOL 6.0 in _The Washington Post_ this week. The
reviewer offered convincing reasons for thinking this new version was
released prematurely. It sounds seriously bug-infested.

For those unfamiliar with the HTML problem, sending e-mail coded in HTML
(instead of plain ASCII text) fills messages up with torrents of alphabet
soup when the list-server converts it to text. Newcomers to e-lists need to
make sure they've turned off their HTML. Web-TV users could do us all a
favor, too, by finding out whether there's a way to turn off all the web-tv
crap loaded onto those messages, and to excerpt the part of a message you
want to quote, instead of feeding back an entire message or thread.

Thanks--
Lelia
