It's a conductor problem I think. They are in a position to assert
themselves in any way they like - and some do it in ways that are
inappropriate. Our conductor last year asked me to lower my stand to the
height of the bassoonist's during a rehearsal (the bassoonist loves it
very, very low!), and I lowered it. 10 minutes later it was right back up
where I wanted it - and the conductor, if he did notice it, didn't say
anything. There are times when the conductor will ask people for their
eyes - and if he has instructed them to lower their stand, he can't have it
both ways.

Sincerely,
Roger Garrett
