The point is both that you couldn't make it all conscious even if you
tried, and also that you don't need to. Trying to make too large a
proportion of it conscious is in fact counterproductive, I assert.
This probably accounts for the large numbers of players who are mere
technicians, unable to make the last steps into musical expression. I can
only think abut so much of what I am doing at one time. It has been my own
personal experience, because of this, that I need twice as much practice as
others at my own level of technical accomplishment. However, OTOH, perhaps
I underestimate what I have accomplished in other terms.
