Sorry about my shorthand(!)
I meant 'autograph manuscript score',
the composer's own.

When one wants to be certain that an edition
is correct that is one of the places to look
if possible, but some composers are not accurate,
(Vaughan Williams) or consistent, (Weber),
and some autograph scores are not complete....
or extant. Others have been auctioned to wealthy
private collectors!

I recently helped Oliver Davies, Keeper of Portraits at the RCM
identify an anonymous manuscript which he had owned for 30 years
and without knowing its author. It was a Quintet for clarinet, horn, strings
and piano like those of Dunhill, Vaughan Williams, Fibich,
Baussnern, Hugh Wood and Robert Kahn. The name had been removed
to conceal it from the jury of the Leslie Alexander Prize competition,
which it won, (but we had difficulty proving it). It was never published.
It was written on Italian manuscript paper and by an Italian composer
with the pseudonym "Self-Help", the title of a popular Victorian didactic
tome by Samuel Smiles (1859) for reasons we have not been able to
discover.... I have been obliged to withhold the name of the composer.

I asked Ricordi for a sample copy, of any work, in the composer's music
manuscript but was unsuccessful. They are now owned by Bettelsmann (sp?)
and demanded a large some of money and that my passport be handed in to
the Italian Embassy. I think I hear the call of the Lesser Spotted Hoodwink,
native to rural Oxfordshire.

I have not seen the autograph

When discussing authenticity and history, does "autograph" mean an
actual dated signature, or does it mean simply "We're sure that he wrote
this himself?"

Thanks,
Bill
