The obvious question is, Why do chamber ensembles (and classical
orchestras and some bands) sit in the first place?
There are a few instruments that can't be played in the best
possible manner while standing. Is it just to make the 'mandatory
sitters' feel at home, or is there something else to it? The length of
the concert or the piece being played? Social pressure --- "This isn't
your solo, but even if it is, sit down like the rest of us" --- or
quality of music?
I can just see one member of the clarinet section telling the
conductor, "Maestro, I _play_ better this way."

Cheers,
Bill
