That's a convenient place for it. (Apologies to our friends 'down
under':-) Do you get *all* the magazines from *everywhere*, Mike?

In fact we (my clarinet class in Italy) located for Ingrid an exponent
of reed-uppermost playing in Milan: a retired ex-member of an Italian
orchestra; and she came and heard him there. (We were all going to meet
up in Biella, but for some reason it was inconvenient for him to come
there at the last moment.) She probably says in her paper that she
thought he played the Eb clarinet, his speciality, very well -- better,
he maintained, even with regard to articulation, than he could do with
reed downward. Unfortunately, I didn't hear him myself.

I've always been a bit negative about the idea of experimenting playing
with reed uppermost, though some people say we should if we're going to
take the recreation of period practice seriously. This is probably
because I have a shortish upper lip, and would have been thrown out of
the pool of possible clarinet players very early in a reed-uppermost
culture.

I don't personally think that it's an interesting enough problem that
overcoming it would yield any great musical insight, anyway, but perhaps
I'm biased.

I wonder if they had experts who told them that they should play with
flat noses?
