Hello,

> Some would say that Eddie Daniels

Eddie Daniels is a fantastic Jazz clarinetist for Clarinetists on my
point of wiev. (He also was a crazy sax)
But he is not the Michael Brecker of the clarinet, his vocabulary
is not so "hip" and personnal ;-)
But for shure i respect his work ... oups !!!,!,!,!

<The clarinet has not been a large part of the avante-garde to my
> knowledge.

I don't agree . If it's not a large part ,
it's an important part !
- Eric Dolphy
I'm not a specialist of Dolphy,
but lot of actual Jazz Playing innovations are coming
from two saxophonists/clarinetist :
Eric Dolphy and Anthony Braxton.
Dolphy is a very important figure of the 1960 Jazz avant-garde.
His melodic's figures are very interesting, original and beautifull.
In my point of view, he is really a bigger improviser in the whole Jazz
history
than Woody Herman, Artie Shaw, Eddie Daniels, Don Byron, Buddy de Franco.
But i like all of them ;-)
Don't forget Jimmy Guiffre also !

Here in Europe, Michel Portal have made since 1970 some very
influencial and good works with his 'Jazz Band".

Do you have listen Bob Mintzer playing bop on his bass clarinet ?
I have heard a nice "I want to be happy " improvisation on a
Don Grolnick album .
Do you know about french clarinetist Louis Sclavis,
he made some album on ECM records? Maybe you will like him.

<To be
> a working jazz clarinetist, most practical-minded students would learn how
to play like Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, and Artie Shaw first.
>

Dont'you think that if the student want to study Jazz Langage history,
as matter of fact he can forget all those clarinetists, if he want ?
There are lot other far better musicians to study :
Satchmo, Miles, Bechet, Hawkins, Billie Holiday,Coltrane, Prez, Rollins,
Monk,
Ellington, Warne Marsh (for me), Tristano , Max Roach, Cannonbal, Bill
Evans,
Shorter, Hodges, Ornette, etc etc etc AND ERIC DOLPHY.
Steve Coleman, Michael Brecker, Yan Garbarek, Jarrett, Pat Metheny,
David Liebman, De Johnette, etc.

> My point is that there may not be anyone "carrying the torch" for jazz
> clarinet these days, only because there is no torch to be carried.

????? Really, you think so ? What do you mean exactly with
"carrying the torch" ? Do you carry a torch ? ;-)

<I respect
> Peplowski for what he has been able to do within the style constraints
<that have been presented to him.

I also respect Peplowski ... but i never heard him. I will listen to him.

My best regards
Charles Schneider
