It smells because there is partially digested food residue in your mouth
and you're blowing tiny particles of it onto your reed. Brush your teeth
with toothpaste before you play, both to remove the particles and to fend
off halitosis (bad breath), and try not to eat anything immediately prior
to playing (whether you brush your teeth or not). This latter point is to
address the fact that, if you play shortly after eating, you will likely
find yourself burping, which brings up gas and particles of the food you
just ate -- which you will then blow onto your reed and into your instru-
ment.
