Don't know if I agree that quality in jazz is always about doing something
different. I think it is a blend of using tradition and your own personal
way of playing. It is that blend, where the listener can tell who the
player's influences are but can also see the individuality and innovation of
the player coming through. The example I think of it Marcus Roberts, a
pianist who has studied and studied early jazz pianists. He had an early
"Monk" phase I think, but soon went back to very early stride players (and
