Dear Anthony T & all,
No arguement about Ken Peplowski being a truly wonderful player, BUT I've
never heard him play anything that's definitiely *Peplowski* other than
Peplowski via Goodman. (Bear in mind that I'm in Australia, so I've never had
the pleasure of hearing him live). Kenny Davern also plays fabulously well
in several style(s) that are obviously derived from Jimmy Noone, Goodman
and Pee Wee Russell (& others), I can usually recognise Davern on first
hearing but can't recognise a *Davern style*.

This seems to be a major hang-up for clarinettists (IMO) - Noone, Goodman,
Pee Wee Russell, Edmond Hall et al defined the small-group style at its best;
Goodman & Shaw defined the best of the big band style, What happened after
that? I can't think of any *great* bop clainettists, and altough Goodman,
Shaw & Woody Herman all trried to adapt, I don't think they were very
successful.
Who defines the way ahead for would-be Jazz clarinettists?
- Certainly not Peplowski or Davern, who although both superb players, are
busy fighting rearguard actions. I certaainly dont know.
Any Ideas, anybody?
rgds,
Tim.
