Richard, it is mainly mental laziness that makes us spell sloppily, through not
checking in a dictionary ( as opposed to a spell-checker ). It is so nice to see
communications on the list in correct form. I was horrified at the mistakes not
corrected in my children's essays, the teachers "explaining" that they ignore
spelling mistakes in "creative writing". Don't forget that people who see mistakes
in print often accept them as correct. And that,I think, is the main reason for
trying to point them out, not an attempt to ridicule the perpetrator. We should
all continue to be willing to learn, especially when we are wrong.
