Several suggestions, from another beginner: (1) most music stores
stock clarinet straps to help with this problem; (2) although I don't
like the idea myself, a number of world-class clarinetists rest the bell
on their leg to relieve some or all of the weight; (3) you should
examine carefully whether you are cocking your arm or wrist in some
unusual way. Most textbooks show a diagram of the 'normally preferred'
hand and wrist position; (4) is your entire body tense, or perhaps just
your arms and shoulders, thereby causing your opposing muscles to tie
themselves in knots and to put undue strain on your joints; and (5) do
you have a rubber cushion on your thumb rest? Sometimes the pain of a
metal thumb rest diggng into your flesh can cause you to contort and/or
to tighten up unnecessarily. Perhaps more than one of the above may
apply.

Cheers,
Bill
