Subject: [kl] scales

Re scales: Howard Klug has a nice approach to scales in his book "The clarinet doctor." So as not
to become phobic of scales with many sharps or flats, you simply proceed from C to Eb, F#, A, etc in
that chord progression so it will end with the B major scale. With each major scale you start at
the bottom note of the instrument and play up and down two octaves in the correct key. Then start
on the next note on the instrument (if it is in the key) and go up and down two octaves. That way
you learn scales as they occur naturally in music, i.e., not always starting on the tonic.
Obviously, when you are playing the E flat scale you must start on F rather than E natural, etc.

Stewart,

I've read and re-read this (and your subsequent post) and don't follow your "C to Eb, F#, A" logic.
If you continue rising in minor thirds, you will (at the fifth stage) find yourself back where you
started. How do you end up on B major when you start with C, then Eb, F#, A...?

Oh, and how did you get a post in to klarinet without the subscribe/unsubscribe footer? I didn't
think it could be done!

Ian
