Welcome to the list, Shell. I couldn't help noticing your comment
that "I was worried that I'm too old." There are quite a few of us who
started (or re-started) playing in our 40's or 50's or 60's. I'm one
of them, if it makes any difference.

Here's one other suggestion: Do your scales backwards as well as
forwards.

This serves two purposes: (1) it helps you go to each note
directly, rather than having to go through the entire scale (mentally)
in order to find the note. There won't be time to run the entire scale
mentally when you're playing a melody; and (2) you'll find that it's
easy to set your embouchure on a low note and then slur your way upwards
than it is to attack the higher notes directly without 'sneaking up' on
them from below. Since you'll need to attack some high notes directly
when yo playing a melody, now is the time to begin preparing yourself.

Cheers,
Bill
