Dear Shell,
I would recommend purchasing the Rubank Intermediate and Advanced
Methods. I can't even remember for sure if you actually need the
Intermediate Method. However, you should look at them both and decide if
you need them both. I bet you could go through them and have your scales
down in no time. I can remember my learning them in the 8th grade from
the Rubank Methods, which are written with the learning of scales in
mind. I also love the EUGENE GAY method, taught to me later as a more
thorough review by David Weber, but the GAY method goes on and on
forever. I guess the practicing of scales is never-ending. Now I am in
the process of learning all of my MODES (I call them "commodes". Tony, I
don't know how to spell commode!) in all keys, inside & out, so that I
can be a better jazz improvizer. I met Jason here at Sneezy from Denver
and he wants to study jazz from me, so I feel that I should have those
modes down and be able to use them in order to be an exemplary teacher
and hopefully to improve my playing as well. So I shall be thinking of
you, Shell, as you learn your scales while I am learning mine. ANNIE

Subject: [kl] Scales?

Hi,
Please can anyone help. I'm trying to learn my scales and finding it very
hard going. I can play quite well now 2 octaves of f, g, a, c, d, bb and e.
I feel however, that although I can play these scales, I can't picture right
off which notes are in them. Now, progressing is getting a little
difficult. I feel like I am playing these scales parrot fashion without
really knowing them. Please can anyone suggest how I should best approach
this mentally to try and get an over-all feeling for scales and keys. Maybe
if I just keep going it will all fall into place naturally? I apologise if
this question is a little basic, but I'm a bit stuck.
Thanks.
Shell.
