I have a recording by Bernstein and NY Philharmonic in 1960. The
CD liner says that Bernstein & orchestra made the recording immediately
after returning from a "historic tour of Russia." It's available on
the B&N web page (probably other places as well) (Symphony No. 5 and
No.9). B&N's description includes phrases such as "the atmospheric
intensity of his interpretation is yet to be matched", "never more bite"
(2nd movement), "never more desolate" (3rd movement), "cheeky",
"caustic" and so forth.
