The Scottish Chamber Orchestra/Mackerras recordings of the Brahms
Symphonies are very interesting. An orchestra of c. 55 players like
Brahms had in Meiningen, and a rationale for using those forces, along
with a 19th century approach to tempo and dynamics - very interesting.

There *was* (once upon a time in a land far away) and interesting
recording of Shostakovich 5 with the New York Phil and Bernstein -
possibly live from a tour performance in the USSR c. 1960. Outrageously
over the top, but never dull! Not sure if iot made the transfer to CD.
