Every once in a while, we who play (or have played) on "2 x 4" type reeds
(e.g. #4 1/2 to #5 Vandorens) need to remind those who automatically equate
high reed number with stuffy, hard blowing resistance that it depends
completely on what mouthpiece you're using whether the high strength reeds
are hard blowing or not. It also depends on how you adjust the tips to play
on the mouthpiece you're using.

A #5 Vandoren V12 properly adjusted, for example, plays easily and
responsively on my Gigliotti P mouthpieces. The same reed is imposible to
use on most anything else I have around. The #3.5 that I can play on quite
comfortably when I use almost any of my Vandoren Series 13 mouthpieces (M13,
M13L, M14, M15) would collapse completely on the Gigliotti. "Stiff" reed !=
"unresponsive" system.

What exactly do you play on with a reed of that strength? you could tie a
2x4
onto your mouthpiece and get similiar results.
