I had my auditions for region just last week (I still need to go pick up my
music.. thanks for reminding me;-)). The first round I went incredibly fast
and missed every other note it seemed. However, in the second and third
rounds (when I say "rounds" I mean etudes... we'll all sit in a room, play
one etude, have a ten minute break, then play the second and so on). I was
annoyed at my performance, so during the break I bought some Starburst candy
(I usually try not to eat when playing my clarinet, but I knew I'd have to-
we're usually there for at least 6 hours in the room). The second etude I
played almost perfectly (it was slow, so the technique of it wasn't very
demanding.. but still;-)), and I realized it was probably because of the
eating. So, my suggestion to you is to maybe try to do something like that
that you haven't done before and see if it works... heck, maybe eating sugar
will help you like it helped me *shrug*. Also, something I certainly need
to work on: plan on going slower at the actual audition than you do in the
practice room. You should play at a tempo you feel you could do blindfolded
(metaphorically, of course:)). Another trap to be aware of: don't lose
focus while up there... an awesome saxophone player went to my school last
year (has since graduated) who knew his etudes almost by heart. When he
went up to audition he lost track of where he was because he was just
thinking of playing and not reading, and he ended up getting first
alternate. Of course, another alternative to that is to memorize your
music. Anywho, I hope that helps.

I have an audition for my area's Regional Honors Band this Saturday. I know
my material and am very confident b ut i have a tendency to choke in the
audition room. This is a problem i have always had but now it has become
even more vital that i lose this fear as auditions for college are a few
mere
months away. Can anyone help me?
