Well, I didn't say that. Difficult to make such a judgement. But I
have the notion that different cultures spawn different mistakes, and I
do think that the notion that there is an authority, and a right way to
do things, is more yours than ours.

We perhaps err on the side of latitude. It's at a higher level, but a
colleague of mine, directing a 'Wind Rep' session at a music college
here, said to an obviously inattentive trumpet player, what seems to be
the problem?

(Wind rep is where you get taken through the wind parts of the
orchestral repertoire, so that you know what you might encounter
professionally.)

And the trumpet player said, well, it's very boring, and I'm bored.

So my colleague said, well, go then! If you don't want to be here,
we're not forcing you. It's up to you.

So he went. (He could easily have stayed.)

Who knows what will happen to him? After all, that interaction might be
the making of him. (And if you want my opinion, I probably wouldn't
have done that if I'd been taking the session, but I support my
colleague's judgement.)
