<><> Surely, the child could [snip] prosper on the clarinet
[despite reed disputes]

One of my children faced a similar situation in softball league.
Parents on opposite sides of an issue forced me, for the sake of my
child's peace of mind and for the sake of her having a sense of
controlling her own life so long as her safety and fundamental welfare
weren't at risk, to withdraw her from the league. [sorry for the run-on
sentence] She wanted to play, but she was *so happy* to be out from
underneath the battling adults.
This battle over the child's reed is a similar case, in my opinion.
Forcing a child to play a reed that's too stiff is simply cruelty. But
plastic vs. cane? Why does anyone care? No matter what the reed, the
child is going to miss notes, squeak, make counting errors, and so
forth. The type of reed is 'de minimus' in a grade school band or
orchestra, or even in a high school band or orchestra.
