Hi, Mark. New voices are always welcome!

I think you know already that they are made of plastic, last
longer, don't vary as much from day to day because they don't absorb
moisture, cost $13-$15 (US) apiece, and don't have exactly the same tone
as a cane reed. Among many other sites, Walter Grabner sells them
(www.clarinetXpress.com).
This year, when my daughter asked me what I wanted for Christmas, I
told her that I was ready to try a plastic reed myself. Since I refuse
to open Christmas presents early, I can't offer you my personal opinion
yet.
Until Legere came along, most people disparaged plastic reeds, but
apparently Legere has solved some of the most severe problems with them.
I did hear Larry Combs play a Legere at ClarinetFest this year. His
playing is tremendous, of course, but I've never heard him (live) on a
cane reed and therefore I have no basis for before-and-after comparison.
Cheers,
Bill
