Roger Garrett's advice to Nancy (below) is great advice! Why take a defensive
attitude and risk making the band director mad when a positive one could help
both your situation and that of the band director. For you, a nice approach
could get you more students. For him, he could become a convert to the Legere
reed. For beginners, a consistent playing reed is a real plus. For parents, the
possibility of having to spend less money overall is yet another plus.

Nancy, for sure, you know what you're doing. Don't let your ego get in the way.
