In the long thread on breathing, I do not remember seeing the following,
which I will post, as always, IMHO. (And in this case, it really is Humble.)

We breath while playing for two reasons - to provide the gas which runs our
instrument, and to provide oxygen (and expel carbon dioxide) which runs our
bodies. Our requirements for breathing are therefore different at
different times. Especially when playing softly, we may have to breath for
our body's sake before we have expelled all of the gas in our lungs and we
need to find a place to exhale before we inhale. This is in contrast to
singing, where the gas almost always runs out before the body calls for
breathing, at least in my experience.

It may be, therefore, that what singers do is not exactly the same as what
clarinetists do, and the metaphors and teaching methods may well be quite
different.
