The barrel's length affects intonation, of course.

Pulling the barrel out can add unwanted turbulence inside the
instrument, which affects tone, if (a) you pull out too far and (b) if
you don't insert a tuning ring(s) to fill the gap between the pulled-out
barrel and the top joint. Having barrels with different lengths avoids
this hassle.
Changing the barrel length, regardless of whether you pull the
barrel out or switch barrels, affects the intonation of certain holes,
whereas pulling the two joints apart affects the intonation of other
holes.

Barrels are available with different bore shapes and this affects
tone. As with mouthpieces, it's not unusual for a clarinetist to use a
barrel from a different manufacturer than his instrument. And similar
to mouthpeces, the choice varies from one player to the next.
