I realize that high notes are part of music, but, truly, I don't enjoy
the clarinet's sound when it gets way up there -- not even when a
virtuoso is playing.

My language was sloppy. I should have qualified my statement by
saying "Bb_ or _A_ clarinet." I enjoy hearing altissimo on an Eb or
flute or piccolo. I mention this because somebody once asked if my
hearing was OK in the higher frequencies. I can hear high notes just
fine.
My perception is that the tone of a lower pitched instrument
'narrows down' when pushed to its limits, by which I mean that --- IMO,
I do wish I could measure some of this stuff --- there are one or two
fewer audible partials in an altissimo note on a Bb or A, but not on an
Eb or flute.

.....anyway, thank you for the forgiving words, Tony and Dee.
Just for the heck of it, I played a scale up to high G tonight. So
long as I'm slurring slowly upwards from something lower, my tuner says
that I can get there.... but it's not a pretty sound. I wonder if
termites are as sensitive as hamsters and dogs are? Several of my
neighbors have needed fumigation recently, but the inspector said that
I'm clean, and he was surprised since my house is nearly 40 years old
and has never been fumigated during the 35 years that I've lived in it.

Cheers,
Bill
