This afternoon my teacher used an image that I heard frequently
when I was a spear-carrier in an opera: "Sing from the floor!" This
image made no sense to me at the time. Surely a singer doesn't try to
use the floor as a sounding board?
Now it's obvious, of course. It's a way to visualize lowering
your diaphragm towards the floor.
The problem with slapping your stomach is that you'll feel the slap
in the wall of your abdomen, which is only half of the below-the-lungs
system.
