Walter, I think you're quite right (as usual).
Good clarinets don't come cheap (especially for us in Australia, where the
exchange rate has been rock-bottom for quite a while).
Unless you have a regular need for clarinets pitched in "odd" keys (or have
an unlimited $$$ supply) it makes good sense to invest in a better principal
instrument than to diversify with a collection of second-bests. I do
appreciate Dan's arguement though - but if you take it to its logical
conclusion, every symphonic player would have to own (at least) a set of
"French" (for want of a better description) and "German/Austrian" clarinets.
To that I suppose you could add a couple of "English" clarinets (e.g. 1010s)
for playing Holst, Vaughn Williams, Britten et al., then some proper period
instruments for works written before c. 1910 --- (Dan Leeson, are you a
squillionaire ? - most clarinettists are lucky if they own their own home!)!
And (Walter) - I agree the apostrophe thing did get a bit out of hand but I
thought it was a bit of fun - sort of like a communal bonfire of trivia &
pedantry. Plenty of sillier things have taken off on this list.
Cheers!
Tim.
