I've got a couple in my case, and use it for exactly the same situation that
James advises. They are *great* in the pit if you're switching back and
forth a lot. I find them a little stuffy, but I believe that to be more
"feel" than sound. Most of the difference in tone is probably not
perceptible to the audience in any event -- and that sure beats a hellacious
squawk if the reed's too dry!

I am interested in trying the 3-3/4 if it is ever readily available.

Legeres are nice, but they are not the only usable synthetic reed. I have a
friend who uses only Fibrecells on his Hawkins; he sounds great. There are
at least 2 bass clarinetists here in Seattle -- 1 of them Larey McDaniel in
the SSO -- who use Fibrecell, too, both with excellent results. Personally,
I like them for tenor, but nothing smaller than that.
