Klarinet Archive - Posting 000069.txt from 2000/12

Clarinettists' indicates a plurality of possession- i.e. something or things
that is possessed by more than one individual of that type. In that way it
is both plural and possessive.
e.g. "The clarinettists' chairs" = The chairs of the clarinettists
Isn't the apostrophe in clarinettists' indicative of posession and not
plurality? Considering that it is the only difference between the plural
form
and the plural posessive, it would follow most logically that that is the
case.
Does anyone have a book of English grammar to confirm or correct this?
Best,
Jennifer
