The very thin layers of plating should have no appreciable effect on key
stiffness. A difference in the actual composition of the alloy from which
the keys are forged is quite a bit more likely. A decision to change it
may even have been made to increase stiffness, even if there was a known
penalty in corrosion resistance. Such compromises are made all the time.
