This is very true. I do not own a C clarinet. I would like to, but I really
have no compelling reason right now to get one.

However, if I were playing professionally again, and in an orchestra that
played a lot of Strauss and Mahler, then I would get one. Why Strauss and
Mahler?

Because I truly believe that both these composers really understood the
clarinet as an instrument and used the C clarinet precisely because of the
difference in tone quality. Please forgive me Dan, I do not have the same
feeling for some other composers.

We can also take this to a ridiculous extreme. Should I go out a commission a
clarinet maker to make me a bass in A? You and I both know how many parts
were written for this instrument.

If I show up at a rehearsal, and play a A bass part on the Bb bass, am I not
committing the same sin as playing the Beethoven on my A clarinet, instead of
a C clarinet?

I do mean this sincerely, by the way. Beats arguing about apotrophes!!!!!!!!!!

Walter
