4th symphony bass clarinet part calls for one less instrument than 1st
Sym.--also expected to play Eb in the beer-garten-music section.
And the bass clarinet doubler has the top voice--I think maybe Mahler
wanted a less refined tone there--as if the band has had several beers.

That is the only Mahler Symphony that i have played. Was glad that i was
on 1st. The 3rd and 4th players were both good on both Eb and bass, so I
gave the player who had played with us longer 1st choice between main Eb
doubling part or everything doubling part. Guess which he chose.

These are the guys who got me interested in bass clarinet because it
sounded like a musical instrument.

Speaking of bass clarinet, i began my acquaintance l with the low C
Buffet that belongs to the orchestra. (I have been using the Leblanc
(serial #69) to build basic chops and experience. )

We are playing just the segment of Nutcracker of Pas de deux thru Coda .
That is the only bass clarinet on the 'holiday' program so i decided that
i would get to play the two short solos.
On Sugar Plum Fairy traded the 1st clarinet part to 2nd player so that i
can have a whole three counts to grab A.
Worked ok in rehearsal.
