Good points, Tim. I wonder how the band director would feel about
performing outside in a parade or half-time show, possibly poor
conditions for a "wood" reed to vibrate freely. Last summer I would have
lost out on thousands of dollars of income playing outside at various
pool side parties and at the Farmers Markets if I had relied on my
Vandorens. I don't play my Legiere all the time, but it has saved the
gig many times. ANNIE

Hmmm. You're going to get a flood of mail over that one.

As principal clarinet in our community band, I play a plastic Vito clarinet, a
plastic barrel, a hard rubber Portnoy mouthpiece, a metal ligature, and a
plastic Legere reed. My instrument has exactly the same level of wood content
as that other woodwind, the flute.

If your director will not permit you to even try a plastic reed, then he is a
dinosaur, and he is not helping you further your musical education. You should
try everything you possibly can, and use what works best FOR YOU. If cane
works better FOR YOU, then more power to you. The Legere's work better FOR ME.
They are absolutely consistent from week to week, and I get enough compliments
on my tone to convince me to stick with them.
