I am sorry if this comes across sounding haughty, but I feel strongly about
this. If a clarinetist is not at ease in transposition (C parts on Bb or A, A
parts on Bb) they should not be doing orchestral playing. >>

Thanks for saying what I have been thinking as I read the recent "Mahler 4"
messages. I would like to add that doing such transposition gets easier and
easier the more you do it. My first Mahler symphony was no. 1, and I was a
sophomore in college and I frantically wrote out the last movement
(originally in C) before the first rehearsal. But I think that was the last
time. Since then, I force myself to read the original parts. After a few
years of reading from original parts, transposing becomes easy enough.

I still have to practice some of those sections though. A month ago our
orchestra played "The Miraculous Mandarin", and the second part is for Bb, A,
Eb and D clarinet. The most difficult technical passage (for me, anyway) was
the second page which was all D clarinet. I think I basically had to
memorize it for Eb clarinet.

I suggest reading from the original parts, practice hard, and get used to it!
