There is an interesting thing in the last movement of Mahler 4 in the
bass clarinet part. Here Mahler has been using B-flat and A bass back
and forth throughout the part for an unknown reason, but one presumes
that it was done to make the key signatures more amenable for the
player. And then, suddenly, with plenty of time both before and after
the passage to use either bass clarinet, he selects a b.c. and the
writes in something like 5 or 6 sharps. It's a little solo for the b.c.

It always caused me to wonder why he put the selected b.c. in that many
sharps when he could have used the other one in a much simpler key.

When I did the work, I used two bass clarinets, switching where Mahler
requested, but that last switch always puzzled me.
