Klarinet Archive - Posting 000024.txt from 2000/12
From: Neil Leupold <leupold_1@-----.com> Subj: [kl] Yikes! A retraction re: plural nouns. Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2000 13:16:28 -0500
Dear Everbody,
I humbly submit to several thousand tongue-lashings for my
previous post on the pluralization of proper nouns. I'm very
sorry. It was a shoot-from-the-hip response, insolent, and I
did indeed mistakenly lump proper nouns together with numbers,
letters, and abbreviations. While the latter three are, in fact,
set to the plural case via apostrophes, proper nouns are not
(something I could have confirmed via just a little prior re-
search). I apologize to the Karel, Gavin, Tim, and anybody
else who may have momentarily thought I knew what the heck I
was talking about.
It is correct to tack an 's' onto the end of a proper noun
to effect the plural case. Thus, "Tonys" is actually cor-
rect, where "Tony's" is not. For somebody who prides him-
self on an in-depth understanding of proper grammar and syn-
tax, I really screwed this one up. Don't ever listen to me
again!
Sincerely,
Neil
