I've played Mahler 4 several times and we have always had one on a part.
For that matter, it has been that way on every other Mahler symphony I've
played. They *all* have tons of instruments. The section of 4 players on
Mahler 1 should have a total of 13 instruments on stage with them.

Have fun... It is stuff like that that makes Mahler such an adventure!
