Ken Shaw asked about the Bach record by Marc Lifschey. I don't own a copy
myself, or I would send you a tape, Ken. However, it is an RCA recording,
released on both Red Seal and Victrola of two Bach Cantatas (forget which
ones) with Mack Harrell and Robert Shaw. As you would expect, the oboe
playing is on a superhuman level, both technically and musically. Wouldn't be
at all surprised if that huge store in west midtown (A Classical Record?) has
several copies (at superhuman prices!).

I also strongly recomend the recent Sony issue "Stravinsky, the Mono Years."
This 2 cd set (which probably won't be in print much longer) includes
complete recordings of Pulcinella, Symphony in C and The Fairy's Kiss with
the Cleveland Orchestra. Again, the oboe playing is, really, too good to be
believed. This is particularly so when one considers that the early 50s did
not allow 'splicing on demand' the way we have now.

Finally, not sure if this is in print, but I picked up a used LP copy several
months ago. Respighi's "The Birds" with Edo DeWaart and the San Francisco
Symphony. This not only features Lifschey nearly 30 years after the
Stravinsky (still sounding fabulous) but also Greg Smith as 1st clarinetist,
sounding really wonderful as well.
